Originally, the fruit of the Hawthorn tree was eaten to boost digestive health and as a tradition in medieval Maytime festivals. Children were encouraged to eat the berries to encourage healthy digestive function and maintain overall wellness. The fruit has also been used to make wine throughout Europe since the middle ages. More modernly, hawthorn is used in jams, jellies, wines, tinctures, and as an all-around flavor enhancer.
The use of Hawthorn leaves and berries for optimum health reaches as far back as the 17th century with Alleyne in his The New English Dispensatory writes only of its use as a diuretic and "powerful expeller(s) of the stone and gravel." This was quickly dispelled when its benefits for cardiovascular health were discovered during the 19th and 20th centuries. Homeopathic and allopathic doctors continue to prescribe hawthorn to this day for their patients with cardiac issues.
Native Americans have a long-held belief in utilizing the hawthorn berry as a heart tonic and to relieve all types of gastrointestinal issues. Packed with powerful antioxidants, hawthorn gives cells the ability to heal and regenerate when faced with disease or malfunction.
