Are you having a hard time getting to bed at a reasonable hour? Is it difficult for you to fall asleep? Do you find yourself tossing and turning at night? Getting a good night’s rest is equally as important as maintaining a healthy diet. Some health and wellness experts would even argue that rest and relaxation is the foundation for optimal wellness! Research has shown that having a poor sleep routine can cause a slew of health issues, including having negative effects on our hormones, brain function and even our exercise performance. Most noticeably, Not getting a good night’s sleep can leave us feeling drained during the day, impacting the way that we think, act and feel. If you are struggling to sleep well, here are four natural ways that you can get to sleep and dream peacefully all night long.

1. Reduce your Exposure to Blue Light at Night:

How many of you are reading this blog post on your phone right now? If you are like most people, you spend a lot of time during the day looking at some type of screen. Whether it be a TV, a computer monitor, or your smartphone, it’s no secret that we spend a lot of time exposed to the blue light emitted from our screens. Exposure to light during the day is beneficial for our health but when it comes to getting to sleep at night, it has the opposite effect on our bodies. When we spend our evenings look at a screen, it can keep us from falling (and staying asleep). This is due to the impact on our Circadian rhythm, which tricks the brain into thinking it is still daytime. As a result, this reduces hormones (like melatonin) which allows our bodies to naturally relax and fall asleep.[1] One of the easiest ways to reduce exposure to blue light at night is to turn off your phone! Instead, take a bath or read a book. Do something that doesn’t involve staring at a screen. You can also install apps to block the blue light on your phone or even purchase glasses that can block it as well. Whatever you do, be aware that limiting your exposure to blue light can make or break a good night’s rest.

2. Cut back on the Caffeine:

If you are a coffee lover, this might be a tough one for you! While caffeine can help to enhance focus and give us energy during the day, it can also impact our sleep in negative ways. Did you know that caffeine can stay elevated in our blood for 6 to 8 hours? What happens is when we drink large amounts of caffeine during the early afternoon hours, it can keep us up at night, making it hard for us to fall and stay asleep. Now, we’re not saying you need to cut out all the caffeine from your daily diet. We love our cup of coffee in the morning too! That being said, try to limit the amount of caffeine that you consume on a daily basis and make an effort to switch over to drinking water in the early afternoon hours. If you do you crave a cup of coffee around bedtime, opt for a decaf coffee.

3. Make your Bedroom a Sleep Sanctuary:

It’s important that you feel like your bedroom is a place where you can truly rest and relax. That means go into the effort of keeping it clean, organized, free of noise and unwanted artificial light. Despite the fact that we spend so much time in our bedrooms, a lot of us have our efforts placed on tidying-up and beautifying other rooms in our house. To make the notion of falling asleep more inviting, make sure your bed has clean sheets and is comfortable to lay on. You can even spray it with a natural mist of lavender oils and water. If your bedroom is near a noisy street, invest in a white noise machine to help reduce the sound that keep you up at night. If alarm clocks or night lights are making your room too bright, turn them off! Make an effort to create a sleep sanctuary in your bedroom that invites you to curl up in fall into a deep sleep.
