For thousands of years, turmeric has been enjoyed all around the world, not only for its beautiful yellow hue but for it’s amazing health and wellness benefits. Turmeric is a kitchen staple in India, added to various dishes including curries, soups, dips and spreads. Once referred to as “poor man’s saffron”, this amazing space is now considered to be Indian gold. Its popularity is due to the health benefits that people receive who eat it on a daily basis.

What it exactly is turmeric? Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant. This plant is a member of the ginger family and is typically found in native to southern India as well as Indonesia. It is widely cultivated on the mainland and in the islands of the Indian ocean. In ancient times, turmeric was used as a perfume in addition to being a flavorful spice. That’s because the rhizome has a pepper-like aroma and a somewhat bitter warm flavor. It is also it gives turmeric it’s strong yellow color. Turmeric’s tuberous rhizomes, also referred to as underground stems, are what is used to make various turmeric products today. Production involves a boiling process which is followed by exposing the rhizomes to the sunlight, giving them time to dry. They are then polished and typically ground up into a powder.

What are the benefits of turmeric? Turmeric has been shown to be a powerfully beneficial spice due to the fact that it contains curcumin. Curcumin is an antioxidant and is what gives turmeric it’s notable color.  This is a compound that is rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been shown to protect and improve the health of a variety of organs inside the body. Thousands of human and animal studies have found that curcumin can help to relieve symptoms including those caused by cancer, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. Here are some of the benefits of turmeric that have been studied and backed by science:

Osteoarthritis: This condition (also referred to as OA) is one of the most common chronic joint conditions that affects more than 30 million men and women in the United States. It is also called degenerative joint disease, degenerative arthritis and wear-and-tear arthritic. Studies have shown that the plant compounds in turmeric (including curcumin) can reduce markers of inflammation, leading to relief of osteoarthritis symptoms.

Inflammation: While some types of inflammation can be beneficial for the body, chronic inflammation can cause a variety of frustrating, harmful symptoms. Scientist believe that long-lasting, low level inflammation plays a key role in many of the health issues plaguing in the western world today. These issues include heart disease, Alzheimer’s and various degenerative conditions. The curcumin found in turmeric has been proven to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Various studies have shown its effects on how it relieves various forms of inflammation in the body, especially on a molecular level. With chronic inflammation plaguing many people in the United States, curcumin can help to relieve their symptoms and promote a healthier, more mobile life.

Brain Function: According to the NCBI, about 40% of people aged 65 or older have age associated memory impairment. In the United States, this pans out to about 16 million people. The curcumin found in turmeric has been shown to boost levels of the brain hormone BDNF. This hormone may be effective in delaying many brain diseases and age-related decreases in brain function.

Mood Boosting: In a controlled trial, 60 people with depression were randomly placed into three groups. One group took Prozac, another group took one gram of curcumin and the last group took Prozac along with curcumin. The results showed that after six weeks, curcumin had led to improvements that were similar to those caused by Prozac. The group that took both Prozac and curcumin achieved the best results. Of course, if you are suffering from depression, it’s important you speak with your doctor or counselor. But studies like this are helpful in showing how curcumin may help to alleviate depression symptoms and boost moods.
